History of Mabton
Settlement in the Mabton area began around 1884, which was approximately five years before Washington became a state in 1889. The town grew out of a Northern Pacific Railway stop where the company had built a water tower.
In 1892, Sam P. Flower built a store and warehouse that was followed by several stores, a hotel, railroad depot and schoolhouse. The Mabton Townsite Company made their first plat for development in 1902 and Mabton incorporated on November 7, 1905.
The current city limits constitute an area of approximately 525 acres with an Urban Growth Area (UGA) of 578 acres. The population estimate for 2015 is 2,500 people.
Parks and Recreation
The City of Mabton has four parks totaling 10 acres. Feezell Park is located in the center of town at Washington & Main Street and is the site of Mabton Community Days held annually in June.
Governors Park runs adjacent to the south of state highway 22. Mabton’s first park sits across the street for the City Civic Center on South Main Street and contains playground equipment, basketball court and sand volleyball court. Our community’s newest park was dedicated in 2012 and is located one block south of Artz-Fox elementary school. This park will be named this year and contains picnic pads, youth soccer field, tetherball courts and a concrete slab for future skate park.
The Mabton Food Bank is located at the Mabton Civic Center and is open every Friday from 9:00am - 11:00am.
